On October 3-5, 2023, the Odesa Center for Nonproliferation, in cooperation with Bodrum Institute, with the support of Ploughshares Fund, held XIIIth OdCNP International Summer School “Dancing in the Dark: The Future of Nuclear Order.”
This year’s Summer School, held in Bodrum, brought together 41 students and young professionals from diverse geographical and academic backgrounds to acquire new knowledge in the arms control and nonproliferation field and build a strong community of scholars with long-lasting networking and academic connections. The four-day school featured a series of keynote speeches, lectures, networking opportunities, and a simulation game.

The agenda was filled with insightful lectures from experts representing the Odessa Center for Nonproliferation (Polina Sinovets, Valeriia Gergiieva, Aderito Vicente, Iryna Maksymenko), the Vienna Center for Disarmament and Nonproliferation (Federica Dall’Arche), the Izmir University of Economics (Sitki Egeli), Georgian Center for Strategy and Development (Gogita Ghvedashvili) and other significant institutions and centers who deal with the research on arms control, nonproliferation, disarmament and international security.

The experts presented their views on the understanding of the current dynamics of the global nuclear order, the crisis of modern arms control developments, the role of missiles and disruptive technologies, the importance of strategic communication, and other related processes that form today’s turbulent security environment.

One of the key strengths of the school was its commitment to fostering a global perspective. By bringing together participants from various backgrounds, it promoted a rich exchange of ideas and experiences. This diverse environment enhanced the learning experience and helped participants to dive into the world of strategy and try the roles of world leaders during the simulation game “Negotiating Nuclear Crisis.”

The participants of the Summer School had a chance to listen to the experts who have recently contributed to a newly published Springer Nature volume titled “Russia’s War on Ukraine: The Implications for the Global Nuclear Order.” The volume presented by Aderito Vicente provides a convergence of perspectives from experts and promising scholars in the nuclear field, representing prestigious academic institutions.

Also, during OdCNP Summer School the activities and initiatives of the Black Sea Women in Nuclear Network were presented by the network’s members and leadership team as part of networking opportunities for scholars who aim to broaden their professional environment in the Black Sea region and beyond it.

Besides a fruitful professional environment, the experts and participants had a chance to engage in an informal setting during common dinners and get to know each other better. Overall, this year’s Summer School marked a new chapter in the center’s steadfast aspirations to empower and support individuals who aim to make a positive impact on the world’s most pressing security challenges.
