Project “Nuclear History of Ukraine”

Background information: this project started in 2014 at Odessa Center for Nonproliferation in Odessa I.I.Mechnikov National University (Ukraine). At the moment the main contributor is the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM).

Project aim: to provide interested parties (academia as well as political decision makers) with a competent analysis on the key issues of the Ukrainian nuclear history which determined current political and social conjuncture of the nuclear related issues. Continuous discussion towards the pros and cons of the Ukrainian decision on its nuclear weapons status is a matter of constant interest, therefore it is vitally important to reveal intrinsic factors about its historical preconditions in order to present objective situation over this matter of principle.

Project: Odessa Summer School on Nonproliferation

Swedish Radiation Safety Authority is one of the leading institutions that actively support educational and training activities in the field of nonproliferation and nuclear security. Since 2009, the Institute of Social Studies of Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University together with the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority have held the international summer schools on nonroliferation, nuclear safety and security.

The objective of the school is to improve nonproliferation knowledge, develop analytical and research skills, promote contacts between participants and regions. This will help to create a nonproliferation community of a new generation of specialists in the field of nonproliferation. Over the years, six summer schools were carried out, and more than one hundred students, young researchers and experts from Georgia, Moldova, Poland, Russia and Ukraine took part in them.
