Odessa I International Winter School “European Security 2021: Arms Control and Nonproliferation Challenges” will be held by OdCNP at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University with the support of the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority on February 11-13, 2021.
The transformation of the world nuclear order brought drastic changes to the strategic stability. On the one hand, nuclear arms control has entered the phase of the crisis, especially after the collapse of the INF Treaty and the critical condition of the Open Sky Treaty. The situation in Europe is substantially aggravated with the shrinking security architecture: the decline of the CFE Treaty, political conflicts, the insufficiency of the confidence-building measures system. In this environment, Europe which used to be part of the strategic stability structure finds itself at the crossroads: to keep following the inertia of the US-Russia confrontation or to come up with its own arms control initiatives.
The purpose of the winter school is to present the European states’ approaches towards the most vigorous security issues, such as: the collapse of the arms control, the situation around Iranian and North Korean nuclear programs, the transatlantic relations, as well as the relations with Russia.
The winter school consists of a combination of lectures by leading international experts and group discussions.
Invited participants from European countries are: university students, journalists, young specialists from nonproliferation and nuclear industry sectors from government bodies, state authorities, and research institutions.
