Odessa VIII International Summer School “The International Security Agenda 2018: Deterrence, Arms Control and Nonproliferation”, conducted by OdCNP at Odesa I.I. Mechnikov National University on July 27-28 aimed at consolidation of the international young nonproliferation community around the situation of nuclear security, arms control and strategic stability created as the result of the recent events. The US Nuclear Posture Review, the situation around the JCPOA, INF and the New START Treaties, North Korean nuclear program updates as well as nuclear security in Ukraine and the region: all of them were the focus of lectures and discussions.

The wide variety of international participants and experts permitted us to organize a really professional discussion, which has become the core of the round table, dedicated to the perspectives of strategic stability in the Russia-US strategic dialogue. The situation was regarded through the lenses of national perceptions: American, Polish, Ukrainian as well as Romanian one.

Most of participants were MA students or young experts/ political analysts and practitioners from the United States, Ukraine, Poland, Romania and Moldova, which gave the highly professional level of debates and provided us with the range of useful conclusions and recommendations as for the international security situation.

The team of the lecturers consisted of: Lukasz Kulesa (European Leadership Network), Mariana Bujeryn (Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center), Polina Sinovets (OdCNP), Aderito Vicente (European University Institute), Wojciech Jakobik (Jagellonian institute), Dmytro Chumak (OdCNP).

Among main topics of lectures there were such topics as: US Nuclear Posture Review, Russian nuclear modernization and its implications for Europe; The INF and the New START Treaties: current problems and consequences for international security; NATO/EU disarmament and nonproliferation policy; the international security implications of the US withdrawal from the JCPOA; North Korean nuclear program and the prospective of the Korean Peninsula denuclearization; Nuclear Weapons Ban Treaty and its role in international security system, nuclear security in Ukraine.
