Dmytro Chumak and Valeriia Gergiieva participated in Insider threats and Nuclear Security Culture PDC workshop, Kyiv

From 21 to 25 of November the research consultant and junior research fellow of Odessa Center for Nonproliferation Dmytro Chumak and Valeriia Gergiieva participated in Insider threats and Nuclear Security Culture PDC practical workshop in Kiev, organized by Kings College London.

At the workshop there were speakers from the Centre for Science and Security Studies, King`s College London: Dr Christopher Hobbs – Co-Director of the Centre; Dr. Hassan Elbahtimy; Alberto Muti – Project Co-coordinator; Luca Lentini – Project Coordinator and Research Associate. Also was invited Dr Sukesh Aghara – Director, Integrated Nuclear Security and Safeguards Laboratory, Director, Nuclear Engineering Program University of Massachusetts Lowell (USA).

During the workshop, the participants deepened their knowledge in the theoretical aspects of the nuclear security and culture issues on the IAEA documents examples. The workshop was structured on the various Case studies and practical tasks. All practical tasks were finalized by participant groups presentations. For example, during one of the tasks a detailed plan of Nuclear power plant (NPP) was presented and the goal was to imagine yourself as an offender with the aim to steal nuclear material. As a result some weal sides of the NPP protection and some imaginary steals were revealed.

Also a key principle of the course was to study pedagogical aspects of the Nuclear security and culture teaching. Plans for the teaching course and various methods for teaching were presented.

At the end of the workshop Dmytro Chumak and Valeriia Gergiieva received certificates of the successful completion of the course.
